Congo African Grey Parrots

The Congo African Grey (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) is the larger of the two recognized African Grey subspecies and the form most prized in aviculture. Distinguished by a bright red tail and pale, almost white-grey facial area contrasting with medium-grey body plumage, the Congo African Grey is an imposing, beautiful bird. It is the subspecies from which the most famous talking African Greys — including Alex, the subject of decades of scientific research — have come. Congo vs Timneh African Grey

The Congo African Grey is larger (12–14 inches) with a bright red tail and pale grey face. The Timneh is smaller (10 inches) with a maroon tail and darker overall coloring. Both are highly intelligent. Congas are more commonly available and typically pricier. Timnehs are considered slightly less anxiety-prone in temperament.
